Traveling without breaking the bank is all about doing your homework, taking your time, and being a little creative. Taking advantage of helpful apps and websites that save you money, finding ways to lower your expenses by planning ahead, and knowing where to look will ultimately lead to a successful and hopefully well budgeted trip. It’s about being flexible and lowering your expenses while still being able to afford to do what you want. Sometimes you must sacrifice a little comfort and convenience to extend your travels as long as possible.
With the right budget and the right mindset, you can make your travel dreams a reality. If traveling is your priority then you can definitely make it happen! I know because I do it!
Below are 10 tips to help you save some cash when planning your trip as well as save on spending once you reach your destination:
1. Be sure to have a plan
If you plan on traveling on a budget the first thing you should do is come up with a plan. Don’t worry about planning every single detail; however, you should at least have an idea of what you are going to do once you reach or destination or destinations. The more you have planned out the less likely you are to come across unexpected expenses. Taking your time can be a hassle, but take a minute to read some helpful blog posts, read reviews, and talk with other travelers for any advice.
2. Book smart
Planning your flights and hotels at the last minute can end up costing you extra than if you plan ahead. The closer you get to your departure date, the more likely prices will increase. If you can, travel during the middle of the week. You can typically find great deals flying out on Tuesdays. If you can fly economy, put the extra money you save on those cheaper seats towards your meals, ride share services, or other accommodations likely needed once you arrive at your destination. Lastly, don’t forget to shop around different sites, airlines, and hotels for the best deals.
3. Use your credit card points or loyalty program points
Many credit cards offer reward points and some even have specific travel rewards. Some airlines and hotels offer their own loyalty programs; however, you must be “loyal” to that brand throughout your travels to maximize your benefits. I would recommend finding a credit card that has an offer such as 2x points per dollar spent on any travel or restaurant charges. Just don’t forget to look at the annual fees when comparing cards. Simply by using a travel credit card for regular spending on groceries, restaurants, and shopping I’ve been able to earn free flights and hotel stays, all by spending money I was going to spend anyway! Most cards offer sign-up bonuses of 50,000 points or more, this alone can often get you a free flight depending on how far you’re flying. You can go a lot further in the world when you take away the cost of flights and some accommodation. If you plan on traveling often and particularly need to fly, then it’s definitely worth joining a frequent flyer program and racking up those miles and points with a specific airline.
4. Network, then chill
Don’t forget to use your social network. Whether it’s your friends, family, colleagues, or acquaintances on social network sites, you may just stumble across a relative who knows someone who lives at your destination or maybe an old high school or college friend who moved to a different city or state. These days we have a vast social network of friends and family that stretches across the globe. Ask your co-workers and friends if they know anyone where you’re going. Staying with a friend or someone you know will save you a bundle of cash. You never know who knows who! Perhaps the best way to save is by gaining knowledge from those who have traveled before you so who better to ask than travelers themselves. Talk with anyone you know who may have gone before you.
5. Avoid “tourist season”
In addition to planning out some of your trip ahead of time, be sure to do a fair amount of research looking into the best time to visit your destinations, then book your trip for the dates just before or after these “busy” seasons. Many in the travel industry call this the “shoulder season.” Don’t worry, you’ll still get to enjoy all of the fun and attractions but likely with less of the crowds. Prices for airlines, hotels, and other attractions may be more reasonably priced than at peak season times. Airlines and hotels often lower their prices during this period to try and attract more customers to fill seats and rooms.
6. Pack well
Be sure to take the basics but obviously try not to over pack. This can help you cut down on luggage and avoid extra fees if you’re flying. Make sure you pack all of your essentials to avoid having to stop at any local stores to pick up any forgotten necessities.
7. Manage your meals
Don’t be afraid to pack a light lunch. Shop at a local supermarket or fresh food market and make a sandwich. Avoid spending a fortune for breakfast and lunch so you can enjoy those recommended or well known restaurants for a nice dinner. Also, don’t just stop in to the first place you see, do a little research and look around to see what your options are. If you’re trying to save money and keep your costs down, avoid buying overly priced drinks and instead stick to water, you’d be surprised how much you’ll save in a week’s time if you cut out the beer or cocktails. And don’t be afraid to take advantage of those free breakfasts before leaving your hotel or hostel for the day, it may help lessen your appetite for lunch saving you a few dollars each day.
8. Don’t be afraid to “share”
Rideshare options are everywhere these days. Take advantage of this and other sharing economy services for cheaper options. There are so many new websites and sharing apps out there that you likely can save some big money looking at these options rather than brand name hotels or taxi services. A few well known sites and services are listed below:
· Uber
· Lyft
· Turo
· RVShare
· EatWith
· Airbnb
· Vrbo
· Campspace
9. Talk to the locals
Don’t be shy, many people love to share their favorite recommendations. No one knows the best kept secrets than the locals and these places often are much less expensive than the overly advertised bars, restaurants, and attractions. Most of the time you will be pleasantly surprised at what you come across too.
10. Take advantage of free attractions such as walking tours or museums
What better way to see the city than to take a free walking tour around town. This will help you get your bearings, learn about the city, and see some of the major attractions. You can find them in most major cities either by talking to the locals, checking in with a local tourist office, or of course searching online. I’ve been on many walking tours across multiple cities and you definitely will get a solid introduction to the city while also getting access to a local guide you can ask questions to. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end. Additionally don’t be afraid to take advantage of free art galleries and museums especially if you are more interested in art and history than tourist traps and souvenirs.

Don’t forget to just enjoy the moment and treasure the experiences and memories during your travels instead of buying all of those overrated souvenirs. Instead of bringing back a suitcase full of tourist trap junk, embrace the memories and experiences. You will ultimately be much happier and your wallet will be much heavier.
